CHICAGO (Aug. 15)—The chief executive of Kingdom Real Estate, developer of the one-kilometer-tall Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, will join top executives from the builders of Burj Khalifa and Taipei 101 in an unprecedented discussion of the past, present and future of the world’s tallest building during the Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat’s 9th World Congress in Shanghai, 19-21 September.

Kingdom Tower will surpass the 828-meter (2,717-foot) Burj Khalifa, the world’s current tallest building, which was completed in 2010. Burj Khalifa earned the title by passing the 508-meter (1,667 feet) Taipei 101, which was opened in 2004.

Talal Al-Maiman, chief executive officer and managing director of Kingdom Real Estate Development Co. will provide an update on the status and design of Kingdom Tower, which will anchor the 5.3 million square-meter master-planned Kingdom City development in north Jeddah.

Emaar, developer of Burj Khalifa, will be represented by chief executive Fred Durie, who will speak about the development of Burj Khalifa as the world’s tallest “vertical city.” Harace Lin Hong-Ming, chairman and president of the Taipei Financial Center Corporation, will address the iconic Taipei 101’s development as a sustainable skyscraper.

The completion of Kingdom Tower will likely represent a doubling of the height of the world’s tallest building in less than two decades, part of a historic surge in tall building development. Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest building in 2003 before the completion of Taipei101, won’t even make the list of world’s tallest 20 buildings by 2020, according to CTBUH forecasts.

In contrast, the Empire State Building reigned as the world’s tallest building for 41 years, before it was passed by the World Trade Center towers in 1972.

“The Past, Present and Future of the World’s Tallest” will be held from 9:15 to 10:45, 21 September, at the Jin Mao Grand Hyatt, the Congress headquarters.
